"the past was not my own and the future never will".

Is dat een correcte zin?

Ik weet dat je normaliter "the past was not my own and the future never will be" zou schrijven, maar dat past niet in de melodie, vandaar.

Ik hoop dat iemand me kan helpen!
Dankjewel alvast!

In deze soort zin, moet je eigenlijk zeggen, "The past was not my own and the future never will be." = the past was not my own and the future never will...be.

NB: de lyrics van Elton John zijn: Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did. Dus, je ziet ook hier hoe hij plaatste het woord 'did' (een vervoeging van 'be') na het woord 'ever'.

The lyrics of Candle in the wind (tribute to Princess Diana) is as followed.
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend never will

your version is the tribute to Marylin Monroe, same song but other lyrics.
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before the legend ever did

I'm sorry, I don't want to argue about it, but it doesn't work in English to say it that way, and Elton John knows that. If you try Googling it, even Google disagrees and asks, "Did you mean: Your candles burned out long before Your legend ever will?" Elton John wrote these lyrics for Princess Diana:

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candles burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Loveliness we've lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we'll always carry
For our nation's golden child
Even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you've brought us through the years

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candles burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed yourself
Where lives were torn apart

Goodbye England's rose
From the country lost
Without your soul who missed the wings of your compassion
More than you will ever know

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candles burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills

Your candle burned out long before your legend ever will

rebekasto, nobody doubts that the phrase grammatically requires the 'be'. Here, however, it only concerns the freedom of the songwriter to adapt the text. And that is permitted. And what do you think of this:

well, spanishjohn, whoever wrote the lyrics for the Dutch site made a mistake. Anyone can say anything they want, there is no law that dictates this, but in a forum where a person is asking for the correct way to say something, then one would hope that the correct way would be given. Based on the website you gave with the song lyrics, it is apparent that you have been misled as to the correct lyrics. I hope you don't take offence, but if you look on any English-language website you will see the correct words. I think the real point here is that the correct answer to the original question was that she needed to add the final word 'be' to her sentence, otherwise English speakers will not understand what she is trying to say. I don't really care what Elton John said or didn't say, nor do I care about the poetic licence artists have with language. But I do think one must take care to answer these questions correctly or not at all. I'm sure you would agree.

De zin "the past was not my own and the future never will" is in mijn ogen correct als het in het lied past.
Elton John.
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend never will

Haha, mijn dank is groot!
Mag ik maar in het Engels schrijven: I can't exactly explain why, but when we say the first sentence, 'the past is not my own and the future never will...' we have to add the word 'be'. "The past is not my own and the future never will be". The best way to explain is to try saying it in a different order. Cut out the first part of the sentence and then you say: 'the future never will be my own.' Then rearrange it back into the original sentence: The past is not my own and the future never will be" With the Elton John lyrics (which are wrong but still, if they had been "your candle burned out long before your legend ever  (not 'never') will", that works because, if you change it around and say "before your legend will, your candle burned out. I hope this makes some sense.
